What is trauma- and how does it live in the body?

Moral Injury: “ “Moral injury is a trauma related syndrome caused by the physical, psychological, social and spiritual impact of grievous moral transgressions, or violations, of an individual’s deeply-held moral beliefs and/or ethical standards due to: (i) an individual perpetrating, failing to prevent, bearing witness to, or learning about inhumane acts which result in the pain, suffering or death of others, and which fundamentally challenges the moral integrity of an individual, organization or community, and/or (ii) the subsequent experience and feelings of utter betrayal of what is right caused by trusted individuals who hold legitimate authority.

The violation of deeply-held moral beliefs and ethical standards—irrespective of the actual context of trauma—can lead to considerable moral dissonance, which if unresolved, leads to the development of core and secondary symptoms that often occur concurrently. The core symptoms commonly identifiable are: (a) shame, (b) guilt, (c) a loss of trust in self, others, and/or transcendental/ultimate beings, and (d) spiritual/existential conflict including an ontological loss of meaning in life. These core symptomatic features, influence the development of secondary indicators such as (a) depression, (b) anxiety, (c) anger, (d) re-experiencing the moral conflict, (e) social problems (e.g., social alienation) and (f) relationship issues (e.g., collegial, spousal, family), and ultimately (g) self-harm (i.e., self-sabotage, substance abuse, suicidal ideation and death)” (Carey and Hodgson, 2018, p.2).

You might have been a part of the purity culture movement of the 1990-the 2010s and developed feelings of shame as a result. You might need someone who “speaks the language” and already gets it.

Leaders in spiritual environments can abuse power, manipulating their members with messages full of gaslighting and/or harmful messaging.

Perhaps you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community and never found your home within the church at all. OR you have left a church or a group that has hurt you deeply and you need a place to process your experiences. We can work together to find out your core beliefs and work towards healing.

More fringe groups? Gotcha there too. I will do not name those, due to their limited sizes. I likely have experience with, or knowledge of most.

Even further? Ritual Abuse? Involved or harmed in ritual abuse? I can hold those. I’m not scared to hear them.

Guess what? Cult behavior extends into other areas, MLMs, tiktok trends or people that you might have followed and given too much of yourself to.

One note here: You will not find me religion bashing. If you are still in a faith, or want to carry some/all parts of your beliefs forward, I love this for you. I am pro-you. I am anti-harm of you.

As we grow, one of the big developments we often experience is a divergence from our parents (or family’s) values/moral/ethics.

Your parents (etc) may belong to a different religion/faith we no longer subscribe to.

You may finally age out of a situation that was harmful. You may finally be at a point where you want/or are able to set boundaries.

Or maybe you just want to figure out why the heck they just do what they do! (And why you are struggling to unpack all your experiences!)

And maybe you’ve come to the ultimate point where it’s time to make that difficult decision to end contact with your family member(s).

I gotchu! Not only have I been there, but I love to dive deep into the concepts of immature parents/family and the effect they have on YOU.

You may also need to grieve the loss of that person (or role they should have played) in your life. Or the fact that this person is still alive, but very much not in YOUR life… and living theirs without acknowledging the harm they caused. The grief cycle is real.
